TEMPLE, GEORGE WASHINGTON ADVANCE TO FINALS OF 2001 VERIZON ATLANTIC 10 BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

Lake Buena Vista, FL - Junior Robert Cucinotta snapped a 3-3 seventh inning tie with a two-run double and sophomore Matt Powell allowed just one run in five innings of relief as Temple defeated Massachusetts, 6-3, to advance to the finals of the 23rd annual Verizon Atlantic 10 Baseball Championship.

The third-seeded Owls (26-28), seeking their first conference championship since 1984 and first appearance in the NCAA Baseball Championship since 1978, will face George Washington in Saturday's championship at 12:30 p.m.

The Colonials (37-22) received solid pitching performances from senior Ron Christie (six innings, one run) and reliever Mike O'Connor (three scoreless innings) to eliminate regular season champion Massachusetts, 9-1, in the final contest of the day.

Junior Travis Crowder collected four hits for GW while First team All-Atlantic 10 honoree Mike Bassett added three hits and two RBI for GW, which is vying for its first conference title since 1992.

George Washington defeated Dayton in the first game of the afternoon, 11-10, as the Colonials pounded Flyers pitching for 16 hits, including three home runs. GW starter Jason Baker (7-5) recorded the victory, allowing one run in seven innings while fanning eight, including seven in the first three innings. Trailing 9-1 after seven innings, UD (32-26) erupted for four runs in the top of the eighth, courtesy of a grand slam by Second team All-Atlantic 10 selection Brooks Vogel, and five in the ninth to close within 11-10. With runners on first and second and two outs, GW closer Bryan Beggs retired Dayton's Cory Allen on a groundout to third to record his 10th save of the season.

First pitch for Saturday's championship is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex, which serves as the home field for the Orlando Devil Rays (AA) as well as the spring training site of the Atlanta Braves. If Temple falls to GW in the first contest, the two teams will square off 30 minutes later for the championship.
