ATLANTIC 10 ANNOUNCES POSTGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS
PHILADELPHIA, PA -- Atlantic 10 commissioner Linda Bruno today announced the league's annual recipients of postgraduate scholarships.
"The Atlantic 10 is proud to be able to provide opportunities for
its student-athletes to continue their educations," says Bruno. "These young women and men are prime examples of what college athletics is all about - succeeding academically and athletically. We wish them all the best in their future endeavors."
The Atlantic 10 annually awards four postgraduate scholarships (two
male and two female) to student-athletes who express an interest in
continuing their educations. This year's recipients are Kate Matuszewski and Rocky Kravetz of Duquesne, Xavier's Maringo Vlijter, and Jill Meyers of
Massachusetts. This is the fourth season that a total of four recipients
were selected.
Matuszewski ended her undergraduate academic career with a 3.99
grade point average as a physician assistant major and will continue her
studies in that field in graduate school at Duquesne. A four-year starter on the women's soccer team, she served as team captain as a senior and ended her career with 10 goals and five assists from her midfield and defense positions.
Meyers was a four-time first-team All-Conference performer on the
Minutewomen's volleyball team. She is the school's all-time leader with
1,730 career kills and ranks among the top five in career hitting percentage (.272), total blocks (381), block assists (313), and matches with double figure kills (92). She also holds the school's single season record with a .308 hitting percentage in 1996. Meyers, who had a 3.85 gpa in political science and English, will pursue a master's degree in sociology of law at the International School of Jurisprudence and Law in Onati, Spain.
Kravetz ended his academic career with a 3.99 gpa in political
science and will attend the Duquesne University School of Law. A career .278 hitter for the Duquesne baseball team, Kravetz ended the 2000 campaign with career-highs in batting (.289), runs (42), hits (50), doubles (11), and triples (5). He also tied his career-best with five home runs.
A three-time first-team All-Conference men's soccer selection,
Vlijter started all but two of the 71 games of his collegiate career,
scoring 14 goals and assisting on 16 others from his midfield post for
Xavier. The 1996 Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year compiled a 3.55 gpa as a
political science and marketing major and will continue his postgraduate
education at the University of Amsterdam. |
