Mike Mahoney joined the Atlantic 10 Conference as its Senior Associate Commissioner for Strategic Communications and Media Relations in August 2026.
Mahoney came to the A10 after more than two decades as the Director of Athletic Communications at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. At Penn, he worked with almost all of the department’s 33 varsity sports at one time or another but was perhaps best known as the contact for the Quakers’ men’s basketball program which made four NCAA Tournament appearances during his tenure (2006, 2007, 2018, 2026) and plays its home games in one of the sport’s iconic venues, The Palestra.
A veteran of numerous NCAA events across a host of sports throughout his career, Mahoney was the media coordinator when Penn hosted the 2006 NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championships at Lincoln Financial Field, the 2007 NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Championship at Penn’s Franklin Field, and the East Regional Sweet 16/Elite Eight games for the 2022 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament at the Wells Fargo Center (now Xfinity Mobile Arena). Mahoney also helped oversee media coordination for the 2025 NCAA Wrestling Championships at Wells Fargo/Xfinity Mobile, which Penn co-hosted with Drexel University.
Prior to Penn, Mahoney spent six years in Big Ten country as a member of the Athletic Media Services staff at Northwestern University. While in Evanston, Mahoney was the media contact for the Wildcats’ women’s lacrosse program and oversaw one of the great stories in all of college sports as NU brought the sport back as a varsity program ahead of the 2002 season and then saw its first class of recruits win the NCAA championship as seniors in 2005. In doing so, Northwestern became the first non-Eastern program in the sport’s history to win the national title. Mahoney also spent five years as media coordinator for Northwestern’s men’s basketball program and two working with the Wildcats’ football program—including the 2000 team which won a share of the Big Ten title and played in the Alamo Bowl.
Mahoney’s first full-time job in sports information came at his alma mater, Dartmouth College, where he was the assistant director for six years and worked with the women’s basketball program through three Ivy titles and two NCAA Tournament appearances. Prior to that, he spent one year as a Public Information Intern at the Ivy League office in Princeton, N.J. Mahoney found the profession as a Dartmouth undergraduate under Kathy Slattery, and also gained experience during his student days as an intern with USA Basketball in Colorado Springs, Colo.
A member of College Sports Communicators (formerly College Sports Information Directors of America, or CoSIDA) for more than a quarter-century, Mahoney was honored with the organization's prestigious Arch Ward Award in 2026 and its President's Award in 2025. He is an 18-time winner in CSC's Fred Stabley Writing Contest, including four stories that were deemed best in the nation, and a member of the organization’s Academic All-America Core Committee as well as chair of its Division 1 Cabinet from 2023-26.
Regionally, Mahoney was the 2017 recipient of the Irving T. Marsh Award (University Division) which is presented annually to an ECAC-SIDA (now East-Comm) member who, in the opinion of the membership and executive board, has exhibited excellence in the field of sports information. Mahoney earned the honor for his work as President of the Philadelphia Sports Information Directors (Philly-SIDA); in that position, he oversees all aspects of the organization’s 25-team Academic All-Area program
A New Hampshire native, Mahoney went to Exeter AREA High School and then Phillips Exeter Academy before attending Dartmouth College, where he earned a degree in English. He also holds a Master’s degree through Ohio University’s renowned Professional Master of Sports Administration (PMSA) program.
