ST. LOUIS – The third-seeded Dayton Flyers held off a late rally from sixth-seeded George Washington, taking down the Revolutionaries 3-2 at the Betterment A-10 Softball Championship. The Flyers will meet the second-seeded Saint Louis Billikens on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. CT at Billiken Sports Center.
Both teams played strong defensively, totaling just one error between the squads across the entire game. Dayton broke the stalemate in the third inning on an RBI single from sophomore Katelyn Goodwin before Ella Holman and Deirdre Flaherty gave the Flyers a 3-0 lead with solo home runs in the fourth and fifth innings, respectively.
George Washington showed fight, scoring two runs in the sixth frame on a pair of RBI doubles from seniors Daniella Lew and Ashley Corpuz. Dayton pitcher Izzy Kemp steadied from there, putting together a 1-2-3 final inning for her fourth save of the season.
Flyers starter Kate Kastelic earned the win, tossing four scoreless innings. Dayton outhit George Washington 8-7, while George Washington drew five walks to the Flyers’ one.
George Washington will face No. 5 seed Saint Joseph’s at 5:45 p.m. on Wednesday in an elimination game.
