WASHINGTON – Saint Louis and VCU both finished at 15-3 and are Atlantic 10 men’s basketball co-regular season champions, the second straight year the league has had co-champions. The Billikens will be the No. 1 seed for next week’s A-10 Betterment Men’s Basketball Championship at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, Pa. The 14-team tournament begins Wednesday with the championship final set for Sunday, March 15.
USA Sports will carry the first three days of the championship on USA Network and CNBC. CBS Sports Network will air the semifinals Saturday at 1:00 and 3:30 pm. The championship final is set for 1:00 pm on CBS as part of their annual Selection Sunday coverage.
SLU receives the top seed by virtue of a head-to-head win over No. 2 VCU. Both Saint Louis and the Rams earned double byes into Friday’s quarterfinals. Third-seeded Saint Joseph’s (13-5) and No. 4 Dayton (12-6) also receive the double byes.
Saint Louis plays at 11:30 am on Friday, followed by Dayton at 2:00 pm. VCU opens the evening session at 5:00 pm. Those three games will be broadcast on USA Network. Saint Joseph’s will begin play in the last quarterfinal at 7:30 pm, which will air on CNBC.
Seeds five through eight earn byes into the second round and will play Thursday on USA Network. George Mason (11-7) is seeded fifth and will play the winner of No. 12 La Salle (5-13) and No. 13 St. Bonaventure (4-14) at 2:00 pm Thursday. The Explorers and Bonnies meet Wednesday in the first-round opening game at 11:30 am on USA Network. La Salle is the 12 seed by virtue of a head-to-head tiebreaker with No. 11 Richmond, and the Bonnies secured the 13 seed with a head-to-head win over Loyola-Chicago.
No. 6 Davidson (10-8) will open play Thursday at 7:30 pm against the winner of the late first-round game between No. 11 Richmond (5-13) and No. 14 Loyola Chicago (4-14). The game between the Spiders and the Ramblers will tip off at 2:00 pm on Wednesday on USA.
Seventh-seeded Duquesne (9-9) will play 10th-seeded Rhode Island (7-11) at 5:00 pm on Thursday in the second round, with the winner advancing to face VCU. No. 8 Fordham (8-10) faces No. 9 George Washington (8-10) at 11:30 am on Thursday for the right to play Saint Louis in the quarterfinals. Fordham holds the head-to-head tiebreaker on the Revolutionaries
The winner of the Atlantic 10 Championship will receive the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
