OREM, Utah - A script all too familiar to GW men's basketball was flipped on its head high in the mountains of Utah on Wednesday night as the Revolutionaries secured their first postseason win in nine years, 79-78, over WAC regular season champion Utah Valley in the first round of the NIT.
GW, which led by 16 at the break, held a four-point lead inside a minute to go, but gave up a 3-pointer and turned the ball over to allow the Wolverines a chance to steal the win. GW forced a jump ball with 8.6 remaining that kept possession with UVU and then came up with the critical stop it had been looking for when Tyrone Marshall Jr. rejected a layup from the Wolverines' Jackson Holcombe seemingly out of thin air to lock up the victory.
Marshall was everywhere on Wednesday night with 15 points, five rebounds, two assists and three crucial blocks. Rafael Castro was also in on help in the final play and tallied a monster double-double, his ninth of the year, with 22 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks, making 10-of-12 at the free throw line.
Outside, Trey Autry showed off his sharpshooting prowess with 18 points on six 3-pointers and Christian Jones did a little bit of everything with six points, five assists and four rebounds.
Holcombe was the game's leading scorer with 27 points and seven assists for the Wolverines, who saw their 27-game home winning streak, the fourth-longest active streak in the country, come to an end at the hands of the Buff & Blue.
The Revolutionaries now advance to the second round of the NIT, facing No. 1 seed New Mexico on Sunday at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN+.
