WASHINGTON — The Atlantic 10 Conference named George Mason sophomore Martim Sereno the Under Armour Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week for the second consecutive week. Duquesne redshirt senior Diego Chavez was selected as the Defensive Player of the Week, while Dukes freshman Hákon Dagur Matthíasson earned Rookie of the Week honors. The awards were announced on Monday for games played from Sept. 1-7.
Sereno, a forward from Mira De Aire, Portugal, tallied four points across two games for George Mason. He produced the first goal of a 3-2 win over Bucknell on Tuesday, netting another goal in a 6-4 loss to No. 6 West Virginia on Sunday. Sereno leads the Atlantic 10 with four goals this season.
Chavez, a goalkeeper from Boulder, Colo., helped Duquesne earn a 1-0 road victory at Syracuse on Friday with a flawless performance in net. Despite Syracuse outshooting Duquesne 17-4, Chavez racked up nine saves to produce the shutout in enemy territory. Chavez picked up his third clean sheet in four games, owning a 0.50 goals against average.
Matthíasson, a freshman from Reykjavik, Iceland, scored the lone goal for the Dukes in the win at Syracuse, burying a shot in the box off his weak foot from an errant pass by the Orange. Both of Matthíasson’s goals have been game-winners this season, one of two A-10 players with multiple game-winners.
