WASHINGTON -- Behind a dominant pitching performance from Dayton pitcher Izzy Kemp, the top-seeded Flyers shut out fourth-seeded George Washington 2-0 in the second round of the Atlantic 10 Softball Championship. The Flyers advance to the semifinals at 12 p.m. on Friday.
Kemp worked a gem for the Flyers. She held the Revolutionaries to six hitless innings after losing her no-hit bid in the top of the seventh. Kemp struck out a season-high 17 strikeouts. She held the Revolutionaries to one hit and two walks.
Kemp escaped a bases-loaded jam in the seventh to secure the win. Cadence Gilliland singled to lead the seventh, which broke up Kemp’s no-hit bid. Madi Mays was hit by a pitch and a walk to Emi Todoroki loaded the bases. She escaped the jam with a pop out and ground out to end the game.
Locked at zero in the fourth, Chloe Wong broke the tie for the Flyers. Wong connected for a two-run home run to left field.
Anna Reed allowed two runs – on Wong's home run – across five frames. The A-10 Pitcher of the Year held the Flyers to three hits, one walk and struck out four.
Dayton will matchup against the winner of Thursday’s 1:40 p.m. game between the second-seeded Saint Louis Billikens and third-seeded Fordham Rams.
The fourth-seeded Revolutionaries will fend off elimination against the fifth-seeded Saint Joseph’s Hawks at 4 p.m. on Thursday.
