WASHINGTON – The Atlantic 10 Conference tabbed George Washington graduate student Allison Heffley as its Under Armour Softball Player of the Week and Rhode Island sophomore Avery Vale-Cruz as the Pitcher of the Week. George Mason freshman Madi Sobota received Rookie of the Week. The awards, which were announced on Monday, are for games played from March 10 to March 16.
Heffley, a catcher, went 7 of 8 at the plate in George Washington’s games against Morgan State and St. Bonaventure. The Lemoore, Calif. native was a perfect 3 for 3 against Morgan State with two doubles one home run, five RBI and four runs scored. Heffley had another stellar performance at the plate in the Revolutionaries first game against St. Bonaventure. She was 2 for 2 with a double, four runs scored and one walk. Heffley finished the week 7 of 8 with a .933 OBP, 2.000 SLG and 2.933 OPS.
Vale-Cruz was lights out on the mound in Rhode Island’s games against George Mason. The Pittsfield, Mass. native allowed one run over six innings pitched in a 10-inning 7-5 victory over the Patriots. She struck out eight batters and walked one. In her next appearance, Vale-Cruz pitched 3.2 innings of scoreless relief. Vale-Cruz surrendered two hits, one walk and registered six strikeouts. Across her two appearances, she was 1-0 with a 0.72 ERA over 9.2 innings pitched with 14 strikeouts and two walks.
Sobota, from King George, Va., made all five starts at DP for the Patriots. She crushed three home runs over four games. Sobota connected for a three-run homer in GM’s second game against Rhode Island. In the third game, she added an inside-the-park home run. Over the four-game stretch, Sobota was 4 for 17, with three home runs, eight RBI, seven runs scored, and three stolen bases.
