WASHINGTON -- The Atlantic 10 Conference has posthumously named longtime Richmond basketball radio and television analyst and Richmond Athletics Hall of Famer Greg Beckwith, who unexpectedly passed away in May of 2024, as its 2025 Bob Vetrone Media Award winner. Beckwith’s family will be presented with his honor at the 2025 Atlantic 10 Men’s Basketball Championship at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C.

The award recognizes those whose service, professionalism and commitment have made a lasting contribution to its student-athletes and institutions. The Atlantic 10 instituted the award in 2006 to honor the memory of the late Bob Vetrone. Vetrone's involvement in basketball covered the spectrum, first as a sportswriter, then with the Big Five, and then as assistant sports information director at La Salle.

Beckwith began his media career as a fill-in as the team's color commentator before taking over the role full-time prior to the 2003-04 season. He and previous Vetrone Award winner Bob Black have been on the call for nearly every major Spider moment since, including the run to the Sweet 16 in 2011, its conference championship in 2022, and its A-10 regular season title, the first in program history, this past year.

Beckwith’s time at Richmond began as the starting point guard for the 1983-84 Spiders, leading the team to the ECAC South conference championship and the program's first berth in the NCAA Tournament. The Spiders defeated Rider in the opening round before stunning No. 5 seed Auburn and Charles Barkley in the first round, a game that marked the start of Richmond's reputation as "Giant Killers" in the NCAA Tournament. Beckwith also led Richmond to the 1986 NCAA Tournament as a senior, earning All-State and All-CAA honors. He left Richmond as the program's career leader in assists and steals and held both marks for more than 30 years. Beckwith still holds UR records for most assists in a season (200 in 1985-86) and most assists in a game (16 vs Navy on Feb. 25, 1986). During his playing career, Beckwith was named the program's Most Improved Player twice, and also won the Kevin Eastman Award, given to a Spider who exemplifies the qualities of team leadership, dedication, and outstanding play.

Beckwith is the third Richmond-affiliated media professional to earn the Vetrone award, joining Black and longtime Spider beat writer John O’Connor of the Richmond Times-Dispatch. Prior recipients for the award include:
