Saint Joseph's Overtime Goal Lifts Hawks to A-10 Field Hockey Championship

RICHMOND, Va. - Milou Kluyt’s goal in double overtime secured Saint Joseph’s a 3-2 win over VCU in the A-10 Field Hockey Championship semifinals on Thursday at Crenshaw Field.  

The third-seeded Hawks advance to the A-10 Field Hockey Championship game for the 10th straight year.  SJU will meet top-seeded Richmond at noon on Saturday for the A-10 crown and NCAA Tournament berth. 

Richmond and Saint Joseph’s will meet in the championship final for the first time since 2019. The Hawks are vying for their fifth straight A-10 conference title. Richmond is looking for its first banner since 2014.  

Saint Joseph’s (10-9) maintained a 2-0 lead entering the third period, but VCU (13-5) scored twice, once in the third and once in the fourth to send the game to overtime. The Rams cut the lead to one on a penalty corner in the third period when Josephine Jense scored on an insertion from teammate Lotje Aalderink. In the fourth period, Emily Foerster scored the tying goal, deflecting a shot by Josefina Ventimiglia.  

Saint Joseph’s and VCU remained locked at two through the first extra period. In the second overtime, Kluyt scored on a penalty corner with assists from Tristan Groff and Emily Tammaro. The goal lifted the Hawks to the final, putting SJU, last year’s national runner-up in position to claim its eighth A-10 banner in the last nine years.  

Kluyt, the A-10 Defensive Player of the Year, scored twice for Saint Joseph’s. She also cored the first goal of the game giving Saint Joseph’s a then 1-0 lead. Tammaro added a pair of assists and another goal.
