WASHINGTON -- The Atlantic 10 Conference has named Fordham graduate student Irene Murua as its Women’s Basketball Player of the Week. Dayton freshman Olivia Leund was named the Rookie of the Week, her second honor of the season. The awards were announced Monday and are for games played on January 2 & 5.
Murua led the Rams to a pair of emphatic wins this week, averaging 18.0 points per game, 7.0 rebounds per game, 1.5 assists per game, and 1.0 steals per game. The Arrassate, Spain native shot a combined 16-29 (55.2%) to finish with 36 points on the week, highlighted by a career-best 24 in Thursday's win over Richmond. The graduate student then put up a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds Sunday at Duquesne, including the game winning shot as time expired to give the Rams the win over the Dukes in Pittsburgh. Fordham is now 2-1 in A-10 play.
Leung scored a career-high 17 points in the win over Loyola Chicago Thursday before breaking that with another career-high of 21 points in the road victory at VCU Sunday. The freshman guard averaged 19.0 points on the week and shot 73.7 percent overall and 58.3 percent from three point range. The Calgary, Alberta, Canada native has now earned two Rookie of the Week awards this season, also winning on November 25.
