BRONX, N.Y. - With the 2024-25 season fast approaching, Fordham University women's basketball is excited to embark on a 8-day trip overseas with stops in three cities throughout Greece that include a pair of summer tune-up games against international competition.
From Aug. 10-18, the Rams will venture to the cities of Athens, Thessaloniki, and Halkidiki, making time for sightseeing, cultural exploration, and community outreach events throughout the week. In addition, the Rams will get some early season tune-ups while overseas, and are set to play a pair of games against Thessaloniki Select on Aug. 13 at 7:30 p.m. local time (12:30 p.m. EDT), and Athens Select on Aug. 16 also at 7:00 p.m. local (12:00 p.m. EDT).
The Rams travel to Europe will mark the first international trip for the Fordham Women's Basketball program since 2017, and the first under head coach Mitchell's tutelage. "I am so excited to take this year's team to Greece," said Coach Mitchell. "I am thankful to all of the supporters that we have at Fordham who afforded us this opportunity to offer an unforgettable experience for these young women. We are going to compete, explore and really get to know each other better. We are pumped!"
In addition to their overseas competition, the Rams will take a deep dive into Greek culture, with a Guided tour of the Vergina Archaeological site & Royal Tombs, as well as a tour of the Acropolis, with snorkeling in the Aegean Sea and biking through the historic city of Athens.
Greece 2024 continues Fordham women's basketball's emphasis as a program to make an international trip happen for its student-athletes at least once in their time on Rose Hill. This is the fourth planned venture out of The States for the program, it will be the first since 2017, as the 2020-21 trip scheduled for Europe was canceled due to the CoVID-19 Pandemic.
In 2017 the Rams took a 12-day trip to Europe, exploring Venice, Verona, Padova, Milan, Rome, and Barcelona, while also winning all five games they would play while abroad. Prior to the 2013-14 campaign, Fordham women's basketball took a two week trip to Australia, New Zealand and Fiji, winning two of three games, including a victory over the Figian National Team.
That rendition of the Rams would return from down under to win the program's first Atlantic 10 championship and receive votes in the USA Today Top-25, before nearly upending #24 Cal in the Rams' second straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
