BRONX, NY -- No. 1 Dayton used a steady flow of offense to burst out in their first game at the Atlantic 10 Softball Tournament, using 15 hits to defeat No. 5 Massachusetts, 13-3.
The Flyers scored four runs in the first, two in the second and seven in the fourth to pace their 13 run showing. After UMass scored the games first run off a leadoff homer by Chloe Whittier, Dayton's first four batters all got hits to respond immediately, with the Flyers first runs being scored from a Chloe Wong double. Molly Grace and Katie Reeg launced sacrifice flies to give Dayton a 4-1 lead through one.
UMass came back with two in the top of the third via another home run, this time off the bat of Jordyn Graime, her second in as many days. In the bottom of the second, Kaelene Walter and Emily Daniel set the table with a hit by pitch and single and would both come around to score on a RBI groundout and wild pitch to push the lead back to three, this time 6-3.
The bottom of the fourth is where the game got busted open as Dayton scored seven runs off eight hits and saw 12 batters come to the plate.
In the game, Wong and Daniel were a perfect 3-for-3 for the Flyers to pace the offense, while Emma Schutter, Kirnan Bailey and Walter each had two hits. For Umass, Whittier led the offense with two hits including the home run.
Dayton is the first time to advance to the semifinals and will play the Saint Louis/Loyola Chicago winner tomorrow at noon. Massachusetts will look to stay alive for another day as the Minutewomen play No. 6 Saint Joseph's in our third game today at 3 p.m.
