Thomas’ Second Half Performance Brings Weekly Honors; Jones Named Rookie

WASHINGTON – The Atlantic 10 Conference has named Rhode Island senior Sebastian Thomas as its Men's Basketball Player of the Week. La Salle freshman Deuce Jones chosen as the league’s Rookie of the Week. The awards were announced Monday and are for games played Dec. 2-8.
 
Thomas averaged 19.5 points, 5.0 assists, 3.0 rebounds and 2.5 steals over two wins for Rhode Island. Against Providence, he led Rhode Island back from a 10-point first-half deficit, scoring 17 of his 19 points in the second half, including a 3-pointer with 24 seconds to go, sealing the victory. Against Yale, Thomas had 20 points, six assists and was 10-for-10 at the free throw line. He scored 18 of his 20 points and had four of his assists after halftime. Thomas scored his 1,000th career point in the win over Yale.
 
Jones cored 19 points against Saint Joseph's in Big 5 Classic Championship Game Saturday. Led all Explorers in scoring while adding four assists and four rebounds, shooting 5-for-11 (.455) and 2-for-5 (.400) from the field. He also added a block and two steals. He averaged 11.5 points for the week, sinking a pair of field goals versus Northeaster, with three assists, three blocks, and two steals.

Nate Santos averaged 19.5 points on .667 (14-of-21) shooting from the field and .727 (8-for-11) from 3-point range for Dayton, including a 6-for-6 performance from beyond the arc against Lehigh, the best deep shooting performance at UD in 30 years, and is second only in Flyer basketball history, one of only three players in Division I to hit 6-for-6 this season … Jalen Haynes notched a pair of double-doubles while averaging 20 points and 11 rebounds in two wins for George Mason, with a monstrous 25-point, 10-rebound performance over UNC Asheville and 15 points and a season-best 12 rebounds versus Tulane. . … George Washington’s Darren Buchanan Jr. averaged 18.5 points and 7.5 rebounds in GW’s two road games this week while shooting 47.8 percent from the floor with a season-high 24 points  … GW freshman Christian Jones had a standout week, shot 71.4 percent (10-of-14) overall with a career-high 17 points off the bench on a highly efficient 7-of-8 (.875) shooting day in a road win at Old Dominion … Des Watson tied his career-high 24 points against Eastern Michigan on 8-of-12 (.667) from the field with three made triples. He added 14 points against South Florida, including a clutch three and free throws in the final minute to help secure the win … Rhode Island’s David Grene had 26 points and nine rebounds against Yale, followed by 12 points and eight boards against Providence, and he shot 7-of-14 (.500) from long range for the week … Chance Moore averaged 16.5 points and 4.0 rebounds while shooting 55 percent from the field in two St. Bonaventure wins … Saint Joseph’s Rasheer Fleming posted a career-high 25 points with seven rebounds, connecting on 8-of-12 (.667) shots from the floor against Princeton followed by a 10-rebound game versus La Salle in the Big 5 Championship game … SJU freshman Dasear Haskins averaged 7.0 points and 4.5 rebounds and was 6-for-10 (.600) from the field in a pair of games last week … Gibson Jimerson led Saint Louis in scoring during with a week, scoring 17.0 ppg while shooting 40.7 percent from the floor while also canning six 3-pointers and posting a perfect 6-6 effort from the charity stripe. Billiken freshman Amari McCottry averaged 6.0 ppg for the Billikens during the week with a career-high nine points at San Francisco … Max Shulga tied a career-high with 29 points in a victory over Georgia Southern, knocking down 6-of-8 (.750) from beyond the 3-point arc … VCU freshman Luke Bamgboye provided a career-high five blocks, as well as four points and four rebounds in 21 minutes in a win against Georgia Southern.
