Hawks Four-Peat as Atlantic 10 Field Hockey Champions

MERION STATION, Pa. – Second-seeded Saint Joseph’s scored early in the fourth quarter, then made a stellar defensive stand to defeat No. 1 Massachusetts and win its fourth straight Atlantic 10 Field Hockey title Saturday at Ellen Ryan Field.

It’s the seventh title in the last eight seasons for the NFHCA fourth-ranked Hawks (17-3), who earn the Atlantic 10’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament .

The SJU win came thanks to a timely goal by All-Championship Team selection Sol Borensztein. Borensztein scored on a penalty corner early in the fourth quarter to give Saint Joseph’s the win, off a pass from Julia Duffhuis that Borensztein tipped in.

UMass (15-5) led in shots, with most of their advantage coming in the first and fourth quarter. The Minutewomen held a 10-4 lead shots and a 9-5 lead in corners. The shots on goal were even at two apiece.

Duffhuis, voted the Championship’s Most Outstanding Player, scored the only goal of the first half, putting the ball in cage on a corner with help from Lily Santi and Kate Crist at 10:19 in the first quarter.

UMass’ equalizer came at 35:40 in the third quarter following a corner and a series of passes that allowed Elena Cloconeanu to setup Neva Eisenga for the score. Both Cloconeanu and Eisenga were both named to the All-Champiosnship Team

Myrte van Herwijnen, the All-Championship goalkeeper, faced four shots and stopped two for the Minutewomen. Marith Bijkerk faced 10 shots and made one save.

The Minutewomen, ranked 15th nationally, await the NCAA selection show.

Also earning All-Championship nods were UMass' Elani Sherwood, Paula Lorenzini, Claire Danahy, and Hannah De Gast. Saint Joseph's Manu Ghiglitotti and Celeste Smits also earned All-Championship Accolades.
