MERION STATION, Pa. – Saint Joesph’s advanced to its ninth consecutive Atlantic 10 Field Hockey Championship game with the second-seeded Hawks’ 6-1 win over third-seeded Richmond on Thursday in the A-10 Field Hockey Semifinals at Ellen Ryan Field.
The Hawks, ranked fourth in the nation, will face No. 15 Massachusetts in the title game at 12 p.m. on Saturday. The No. 1 seeded Minutewomen defeated fourth-seeded VCU to advance to the championship. It’ll be the third straight meeting for Saint Joe’s (16-3) and UMass (15-4) in the A-10 championship match.
Saint Joe’s tallied a goal in each quarter led by a two-goal performance by Manu Ghigliotti. Ghigliotti scored in the first quarter on an assist by Lily Santi. Celeste Smits added a goal on a rebound from a corner shot. Ghigliotti tacked on an unassisted goal in the second quarter for a 3-0 Hawks lead at the end of the first half. The Hawks added goals from Julia Duffhuis, Alison Buffington and Yfke Walter in the second half.
Valen Luna Paratore scored for Richmond in the fourth quarter on assists from Jess McMeeking and Freya MacKay. It’s her 12th goal of the season.
Saint Joe’s has won six of their previous eight A-10 championship title appearances.
