Flyer Volleyball Wins in Three to Reach 11th Straight Title Match

DAYTON, Ohio – Top seeded Dayton began its quest for an unprecedented 17th Atlantic 10 Volleyball Championship with s decisive 3-0 (25-18, 25-16, 25-16) victory over No. 4 Davidson Saturday afternoon at Frericks Center.

The Flyers (29-1) advance to their 11th straight A-10 title match, set for Sunday against the winner between No. 2 VCU and No. 3 Loyola Chicago. Davidson, which topped George Washington 3-1 in Friday’s quarterfinals, closes its season at 16-15.

The Wildcats opened the match on fire, scoring six of the first nine points, with three straight kills from Anna Withee and Meile Songaila. Dayton chipped away at that lead and tied it at 13 on a kill by Lexie Almodovar, who lead all hitters with 14 kills for the match. The Flyers then ripped off five straight points to lock down a big lead and the set one win. UD was in control through most of sets two and three, never trailing in the final frame to secure the championship berth.

Liana Sarkissian hit an impressive .684, tallying 13 kills while Alyssa Miller registered 43 assists. Karissa Kaminski recorded a match-high 16 digs. Alayna Yates had six blocks. As a team, Dayton crushed its attack, hitting at an eye-popping 437 clip, committing only nine errors in 87 swings.

 Isabel Decker led Davidson’s attack with 11 kills.
