WASHINGTON -- The Atlantic 10 Conference named Rhode Island sophomore Lauren MacDonald its Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week and her teammate freshman goalkeeper Chelsea Mohammed its Defensive Player of the Week. Dayton freshman Laney Smith was selected as the Rookie of the Week. The awards are for games played Oct. 7 - 13 and was announced on Monday.
MacDonald had a goal and an assist to lead Rhode Island to a 2-0 win at Fordham in the team's lone match of the week The Gibsonia, Pa. native assisted on Kaia Rice's goal that put URI ahead 1-0 and later put the win away when she slipped a shot to the back of the net in the 67th minute. This marked Rhode Island's first win at Fordham in more than two decades, dating back to 2001.
Making her second career start, Mohammed made five saves to record her first career shutout in a 2-0 win at Fordham. Four of her saves came in the second half as she prevented the home team from getting back in the match to give Rhode Island their first win at Fordham in more than two decades, dating back to 2001.
Smith led Dayton to the 3-2 win at Massachusetts Sunday in the Flyers' lone match of the week. The Fort Thomas, Ky. native scored two goals, including her first career game-winner, in her first career multi-goal match. Both shots Smith got off in her 37 minutes of action both found the back of the net.
