WASHINGTON – The Atlantic 10 Conference has named George Washington senior James Bishop IV its Men's Basketball Player of the Week. George Washington redshirt freshman Darren Buchanan, Jr. was chosen as the league’s Rookie of the Week. The awards were announced Monday and are for games played Jan. 1-7.
Bishop dominated last week, averaging 30.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 1.5 blocks while shooting 52.9 percent from the floor, 54.5 percent from beyond the arc and 81.8 percent from the free throw line. In Wednesday's triple overtime game versus Fordham, the guard scored 32 points on an efficient 11-of-21 shooting, including a 4-of-7 showing from deep and a 6-of-8 day at the free throw line. He also added six assists, five rebounds and a career-high three blocks, just the second 30/5/5/3 game in the NCAA this season. A Baltimore native, Bishop then carried GW to a road win at VCU, including the game-winning shot with 1.7 seconds remaining. He scored 23 of his 28 points after halftime, connecting on 7-of-13 shots, 2-of-4 from three and 12-of-14 free throws. He added five more rebounds, three assists and two steals. This marks the second Player of the Week award this season for Bishop.
Buchanan introduced himself to A-10 play with a dominant showing versus Fordham and a strong defensive effort vs. VCU. In two games, Buchanan averaged 23.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.0 steals and shot 47 percent from the floor and 71 percent from the free throw line. A forward from Washington, D.C., he scored 38 points in the Revolutionaries’ triple-overtime game against Fordham, the most for a freshman in the country this season. He made 15-of-30 shots, added six rebounds and four steals. The 38 points were the most by a GW freshman since 1999. On Saturday at VCU, Buchanan scored nine points with four rebounds, and limited Sean Bairstow, who entered the game shooting 54 percent from the field, to 2-of-13 on the day. This marks the second Rookie of the Week award this season for Buchanan and the fifth rookie honor for a GW player.
