WASHINGTON – The Atlantic 10 Conference has named Dayton junior DaRon Holmes II its Men's Basketball Player of the Week. George Washington redshirt freshman Garrett Johnson was chosen as the league’s Rookie of the Week. The awards were announced Monday and are for games played Dec. 25-31.
Holmes led the Flyers to their seventh consecutive win with his second double-double of the season. A forward from Goodyear, Ariz., he had 27 points, 10 rebounds, four assists, two blocked shots and two steals in a 78-69 win over Longwood. The points, rebounds, assists and blocked shots were all team highs. Holmes shot .692 from the field (9-for-13), .600 from deep (3-for-5) and .600 from the line (6-of-10). He is the only player in D-I who has at least 28 blocked shots to also have 33 assists.
Johnson recorded his team-leading third double-double of the season in GW's victory over Maryland Eastern Shore on Saturday. A forward from Oakton, Va., he scored a team-high 18 points on 6-of-13 (.462) shooting while also grabbing 10 rebounds with two steals, a block and an assist. This is Johnson’s third A-10 Rookie of the Week honor this season.
