WASHINGTON – The Atlantic 10 Conference has named Dayton junior DaRon Holmes II and Richmond graduate student Jordan King its Men's Basketball Co-Players of the Week. George Washington freshman Garrett Johnson was chosen as the league’s Rookie of the Week. The awards were announced Monday and are for games played Jan. 8-14.
Holmes had a spectacular game in leading Dayton to its 10th consecutive win with 33 points and 12 rebounds at Duquesne. The forward from Goodyear, Ariz., made 12-of-18 (.667) from the field, and 3-of-5 (.600) from threes. It was his third double-double of the year (all in the last seven games) and 20th of his career. When Duquesne pulled to within four midway through the second half, Holmes scored 14 of Dayton's next 16 points to push the lead back out to 14 by the four-minute mark. He scored 33 points in just 30 minutes of action, and needed just 18 shots to reach it.
King averaged 23.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.0 steals while shooting 57.1 percent (16-of-28) from the field and A sparkling 78.6 percent (11-for-14) from 3-point range as Spiders went 2-0 last week. A guard from Albany, N.Y., he made back-to-back 3-pointers in final five minutes at Loyola to turn a four-point Spiders deficit into a two-point lead, and UR never trailed again as Spiders snapped a 10-game road losing streak. He then had a monster game, scoring 31 points versus George Mason, 13 more than any other player, as UR won its ninth straight home game. King hit three 3-pointers in 73 seconds in first half to help Spiders turn a deficit into an 8-point lead, and like at Loyola, Richmond never trailed again after his barrage.
Johnson tied a career-high with 23 points in leading GW to an overtime win over Davidson on Saturday. The guard from Oakton knocked down 5-of-9 (.556) 3-pointers (tying a career-high), including the go-ahead bucket in the first minute of overtime. Johnson was 8-of-16 (.500) overall on the day, adding three rebounds and a steal. This is Johnson’s fourth A-10 Rookie of the Week honor this season.
