NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Atlantic 10 Conference has named Loyola Chicago graduate student Maidson Ebeling as its Softball Player of the Week. George Mason graduate student Aly Rayle was named Pitcher of the Week. Rhode Island freshman Ashley Hibbard was selected as the league’s Rookie of the Week. The awards were announced Monday and are for games played May 1-7
Ebeling hit .556 over a 3-0 weekend vs. Dayton. A shortstop from Barlett, Ill, she tallied at least one hit in each game, and went 2-for-3 in each of the final two games. Ebeling recorded a double and run scored in game one, and she finished with one double, one run and one RBI in game three. She hit in the game winning run for the sweep and tallied a steal before sneaking home for the final run of a 2-0 shutout
Rayle tossed her third no-hitter of the season in Friday's game against UMass. In a game that went extra innings, the Herndon, Va., product pitched 8.0 innings, gave up no hits or runs, allowed only one walk and struck out a season-high 12 batters. After allowing a one-out walk in the first, Rayle retired 23 straight batters the rest of the game. On the weekend, she went 2-0, pitching 14.2 innings, had a 0.00 ERA and only allowed one hit and one walk. She finished with 21 strikeouts and set a new Mason single-season strikeout record with 203 Ks on the year.
Hibbard was 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA over 9.0 innings of work in two appearances against regular-season champion Saint Louis. A southpaw from Glendora, Calif., Hibbard threw her first career complete game with a three-hit shutout in a 1-0 win over the Billikens that officially clinched Rhody's first postseason bid in 13 years. She allowed just three hits and two walks while striking out three batters. Hibbard also came on in relief in the series finale and threw 2.0 innings of scoreless relief, giving up one hit and one walk while keeping URI close in a 1-0 loss.
