NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Atlantic 10 Conference has named St. Bonaventure junior Kennedy Haberl and Saint Louis freshman Abby Mallo as its Co-Softball Players of the Week. Loyola Chicago sophomore Andie Broniewicz was named Pitcher of the Week and Dayton freshman Izzy Kemp was selected as the league’s Rookie of the Week. The awards were announced Monday and are for games played March 27 – April 2.
Playing second base, Haberl slashed .615/.667/1.077 in five games last week for the Bonnies, going 8-for-14 at the plate with four RBI and a pair of home runs while also drawing two walks. The Elma, N.Y., native started her week Wednesday at Youngstown State with a 2-for-2 outing in game one. In game one of a three-game series against Loyola Chicago, Haberl went 2-for-4 with a three-run home run, helping the Bonnies to a 7-1 win. In the series finale, she was 3-for-3 with a solo home run.
In three games last week, Mallo batted. 455 with team highs of nine RBI, an .818 slugging percentage, a .500 on-base percentage and a 1.318 OPS. She hit safely and had at least two RBI in all three games. Playing third base for the Billikens, the Oak Lawn, Ill., product began the week with a double, a single and four RBI versus Eastern Illinois. She hit a three-run home run and added a single in game one at UMass, then drove in two more runs with a single and a bases-loaded walk in game two.
Broniewicz pitched two complete games last week. She began by tossing a no-hitter against Bradley for her second straight shutout of the year. The Plainfield, Ill., native struck out five Braves in the effort. Broniwwicz then tallied her third straight win, giving the Ramblers a series-opening win over St. Bonaventure. She retired a career-high seven Bonnies on strikeouts and gave up only two hits. She recorded a .50 ERA for the week.
Kemp picked up two wins and a save while posting a 1.11 ERA over 12.2 innings of work in four appearances this past week. In the first game at George Washington, she recorded her first collegiate complete-game no-hitter as she struck out nine of the 18 batters she faced in Dayton's five-inning win. In the nightcap, Kemp collected her fourth save of the season after closing out the Flyers' come-from-behind 4-3 win over the Colonials. On Sunday, the Westfield, Ind., product struck out eight more in 6.0 innings of action as Dayton secured the A-10 sweep of GW.
