NEW YORK (AP) Toumani Camara and DaRon Holmes registered 17 points apiece as second-seeded Dayton held off upset-minded No. 10 Saint Joseph's down the stretch, 60-54, on Thursday night in the quarterfinal round of the Atlantic 10 Conference Championship.
Win in hand, the Flyers return to the A-10 semifinals for the second consecutive season, and will take on the victor between No. 3 Fordham and 11th-seeded La Salle on Saturday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. with a national broadcoast via CBS Sports Network.
"When you look at the defensive numbers, what we've been able to do from a defensive standpoint, the defense carried the day for us," Dayton head coach Anthony Grant said. "Just the rebounding carried the day for us. And we were able to make enough plays offensively to be able to come out with the win."
Camara had 18 rebounds and four steals for the Flyers (22-11). Holmes added nine boards and four blocks. Malachi Smith was 5-of-13 shooting (1-for-4 from distance) to finish with 11 points, while adding three steals.
The Hawks (16-17) were led in scoring by Erik Reynolds II, who finished with 19 points. Lynn Greer III added nine points, five assists and two steals. In addition, Christian Winborne finished with nine points.
"We wanted to be the most united team we could be by the end of the season," Saint Joseph's head coach Billy Lange said. "That's the goal of our program. I feel like our guys accomplished that, and then some. Teaching us a lot about spirit, respecting each other, elevating each other, serving each other, sharpening each other. So as hard as this one is to take on a multitude of levels, because of things that happened within the game, some in our control and some out, I don't want it to take away from the growth of both this team collectively and individually and our program as a whole."
