NEW YORK (AP) Josh Oduro had a double-double and Ronald Polite III put fifth-seeded George Mason ahead off a 3-pointer with 47 seconds left in a 62-57 win over No. 12 Richmond in the second round of the Atlantic 10 Conference Championship.
With the win, the Patriots set up a quarterfinals battle against fourth overall Saint Louis on Thursday, opening tip slated for early Thursday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. with a live broadcast via USA Network.
"I felt we was just resilient," Polite III said. "We got behind. It was tough going, but we just stayed together as a team, kept the team together. We locked in on D, and offense is just going to take care of itself."
Oduro scored 16 points with 10 rebounds for Mason (20-12). Polite III also scored 16 points. Davonte Gaines shot 3-for-5 from beyond the arc to finish with nine points. The Patriots prolonged their winning streak to six games as well.
"We got in at halftime, no one was wavering," Oduro added. "There were some times during the game where we were down, and no one wavered. We're going to hit some threes, we're going to hit some big free throws, but at the end of the day, everyone just keeping that same mindset, making sure that we're locked in."
The Spiders (15-18) were led in scoring by Tyler Burton, who finished with a game-high 23 points, six rebounds and two steals. Richmond also got 17 points and two blocks from Neal Quinn. Matt Grace tacked on seven points.
"Certainly didn't make a couple of key shots down the stretch when they did, and that probably was the difference in the game at the end," Richmond interim head coach Peter Thomas said. "But we knew it was going to be tight and a back-and-forth game, and I thought our guys did a great job giving ourselves a chance to win there."
