NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Atlantic 10 Conference tabbed Massachusetts graduate student Sam Breen as the league’s final Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for the 2022-23 campaign while Saint Joseph’s freshman Laura Ziegler garnered her third consecutive Rookie laurels. The awards were announced Monday following the conclusion of the final week of regular-season contests played Feb. 20-25.

Breen, a product of Gibsonia, Pa., averaged 23.0 points, 9.5 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game across a 1-1 week for UMass, leading the Minutewomen to a decisive victory Saturday against GW en route to a share of the A-10 regular-season title. The graduate student racked up a total 46 points across the two contests, dropping an even 23 versus both Saint Louis and George Washington. Overall, she finished 20-for-38 (.526) from the field, including 3-for-6 (.500) from beyond the arc, while sinking 3-of-5 (.600) attempts from the charity stripe. Breen registered 19 boards on the week as well, including 10 against the Colonials for her 16th double-double of the season, while also dishing out a key 10 assists.

Ziegler, a now eight-time winner of the weekly rookie accolades, compiled a double-double throughout a 1-1 week for Saint Joseph’s, scoring 12.5 points per game and tallying 11.0 rebounds. The Herlev, Denmark, import posted her eighth double-double of the season in a tight road loss against George Mason behind a 17-point, 10-board outing, shooting 8-of-12 (.667) from the floor. The freshman followed up with eight points and 12 rebounds in a vital Senior Day win against Duquesne, tacking on two assists, a block and a steal.
