NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Atlantic 10 Conference has named Dayton sophomore DaRon Holmes II as its Men's Basketball Player of the Week. George Washington freshman Maximus Edwards and St. Bonaventure freshman Yann Farell were named Co-Rookies of the Week. The awards were announced Monday and are for games played Feb. 20-26.
Holmes, a forward, averaged 28.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.0 blocked shots in two games last week. He shot .645 (20-for-31) from the field and .696 (16-of-23) from the line. A Goodyear, Ariz., native, he scored 22 points in a win at UMass on Wednesday, and then tallied a career-high 34 points Saturday against George Mason. He is the only player in the top four in the A-10 in scoring and rebounding. He leads D-I in dunks (76).
Edwards, a guard from Stratford, Conn., was instrumental in GW's 2-0 week, averaging 11.0 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists while shooting 47.4 percent (9-of-19) from the floor and 40 percent (4-for-10) from beyond the arc. Edwards played all but three minutes in Wednesday's overtime victory at Rhode Island, scoring 15 points on 6-of-12 shooting (including sinking three 3-pointers) with five rebounds and four assists. Edward then posted an all-around effort of seven points, six rebounds and an assist in GW's win over La Salle Saturday.
Farell averaged 11.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, shot 46.7 percent (7-of-15) from the field and 50 percent (6-of-12) from the 3-point range in two games this week. He posted 13 points, five rebounds, two blocks and an assist in a win over Saint Joseph's on Sunday for his 14th game in double-figure scoring this season. The forward from Libreville, Gabon also nine points at Davidson, with four rebounds and a steal.
