NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Atlantic 10 Conference has named George Washington senior James Bishop IV its Men's Basketball Player of the Week. George Washington freshman Darren Buchanan, Jr. was chosen as the league’s Rookie of the Week, the third straight week a Revolutionary freshman has earned the rookie accolade. The awards were announced Monday and are for games played Nov. 20-27.
Bishop had an incredible three days at the Baha Mar Hoops Nassau Championship, lifting GW to a 2-1 showing. Bishop tied the event's scoring record with 78 points in three games and was named to the All-Tournament team. Bishop averaged 26.0 points and 5.0 assists, shooting 51 percent from the floor, 35 percent from 3-point range and 94 percent from the free throw line, scoring 20+ points with 4+ assists in each game. The guard form Baltimore, Md., opened the tournament in the double overtime victory over Ohio, scoring 28 points on 10-of-21 shooting (4-of-9 (.444) from 3-point range) with five assists to boot. He then added 22 on Saturday versus UIC on 8-of-18 (.444) shooting, dishing out six helpers to go along with three rebounds. He then saved his best for last in a dominant day against Delaware on Sunday, scoring 28 points again on an efficient 10-of-16 (.625) shooting with four assists and two steals.
Buchanan had a breakout Baha Mar Hoops tournament, helping GW to a 2-1 record. He averaged 17.3 points, 6.3 rebounds while shooting 66.7 percent from the floor and free throw line. He also added four assists, three steals and two blocks. The Washington, D.C. native, was monumental in GW's double overtime victory over Ohio on Friday, scoring a career-high 25 points on 9-of-12 shooting, adding six rebounds, two assists and a block. He followed it up with 14 points (4-of-7 (.571) from the field), five rebounds and two steals versus UIC on Saturday before earning his first career start against Delaware on Sunday. Against the Blue Hens, Buchanan scored 13 points on 5-of-8 (.625) shooting with eight rebounds and two assists.
