DAVIDSON, N.C. – Dayton won its 16
th Atlantic 10 Volleyball Championship Sunday, beating Loyola Chicago 3-1 (25-13, 16-25, 25-22, 26-24) at Belk Arena.
The Flyers (31-2) advance to the NCAA Tournament as the league automatic qualifier.
Dayton was leading the match 2-1, but trailing in set four and facing set point, but a block by Taylor Russell, a kill from Amelia Moore and an ace by the Championship’s Most Outstanding Player Lexie Almodovar helped the Flyers score five straight points to tie, then win the match.
Dayton won set one decisively, but the Ramblers (19-12) countered in the second to even the match. The Flyers won a tightly contested third set with kills by Almodovar and Alayna Yates.
Almodovar’s 20 kills and 14 digs led UD statistically. Alyssa Miller, who was named to the All-Championship Team, tallied 46 assists. Yates recorded six blocks for Dayton.
Karlie McNabb had 10 kills and 12 digs to lead Loyola. Bree Borum, who was named to the All-Championship Team had 31 assists and 21 digs. Taylor Venutro had seven blocks for the Ramblers.
Joinging Almodovar, Miller, and Borum on the All-Championship Team were Russell as well as Loyolay’s Addie Barnes. Kayla Richardson of Saint Louis, and VCU’s Anja Kujundzic, who set a championship record with 39 digs in the quarterfinals, also made the team.
