NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Atlantic 10 Conference has named Rhode Island junior Jaden House its Men's Basketball Player of the Week. George Washington freshman Garrett Johnson was chosen as the league’s Rookie of the Week. The awards, which are the first of the season, were announced Monday and are for games played Nov. 6-12.
House opened his Rhode Island career with back-to-back 20-point games, scoring 25 in an 81-70 win over Central Connecticut State and following that with 22 in a 93-80 win over Fairfield. He is the first Ram to begin the season with two straight 20-point games in 12 years. The guard from Richmond, Va., shot .655 from the floor (19-for-29), shooting 10-for-18 against CCSU and 9-for-11 against Fairfield. He also was 5-for-8 from 3-point range. He averaged 23.5 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game.
In his return to competitive basketball in two and a half years, Johnson excelled in GW's 2-0 week. A combo guard/forward from Oakton, Va., he averaged 18.0 points, 7.5 rebounds and 1.0 blocks while shooting 70 percent (12-of-17) from the floor, 60 percent (6-for-10) from deep and he was perfect (6-of-6) at the line Johnson earned the start in his career debut, scored 10 of GW's first 17 points and finished with a team-high 21 points and nine rebounds on 8-of-10 shooting, including 5-of-7 from beyond the arc. He became the first GW freshman to score at least 20 points in their career debut since at least 2000. He followed it up with 15 points and six boards against William & Mary on Saturday.
