NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Reigning Atlantic 10 Men's Soccer champion Saint Louis earned recognition as the preseason front-runner entering the 2022 campaign, per the league's annual Preseason Poll. Additionally, the conference released the 12-man Preseason All-Conference Team on Wednesday afternoon in advance of the season's opening slate of matches set for next Thursday, Aug. 25.

The A-10 Preseason Poll and Preseason All-Conference Team are voted on by the league's head coaches.

The Billikens enter the season a near-unanimous top overall selection in the poll, earning 193 total points behind 13 first-place votes. Returning A-10 first-team choice John Klein leads the way for SLU on the Preseason All-Conference Team, as he is joined by redshirt sophomore midfielder Christian Buendia along with graduate transfer defenders Alberto Suarez and Lane Warrington. Under the direction of defending A-10 Coach of the Year Kevin Kalish, Saint Louis secured the program's third-ever title last year after compiling an undefeated 12-0-3 regular-season mark and perfect 8-0-0 run in A-10 competition, topping sixth-seeded Duquesne, 2-1, in the Atlantic 10 Championship Final before faltering to eventual national runner-up Washington in the NCAA Quarterfinals.

Rhode Island slotted in at second on the Preseason Poll, registering 170 total points. Redshirt senior forward Patrick Agyemang, another 2021 A-10 first-team selection, headlines the returning corps for the Rams, as second-teamer Edvin Akselsen along with All-Academic choice Zach Drayer rounded out the URI Preseason All-Conference picks. Rhody battled its way into the A-10 Championship Semifinals a year ago following a strong 10-5-2 (5-2-1) run, falling to No. 6 Duquesne by a narrow 2-1 margin.

VCU collected 154 total points en route to a No. 3 ranking in the poll, composing a 9-7-2 (4-3-1) mark for the 2021 campaign. After losing a tiebreaker for the fourth overall seed, the Rams dropped a double-overtime barn burner against No. 4 Fordham, 2-1, in the A-10 Championship Quarterfinals.

With 141 total points, Fordham grabbed fourth in the poll. The Rams pushed eventual league champion Saint Louis to the brink throughout their A-10 Championship Semifinals clash, forcing a 0-0 draw before failing to advance on penalty kicks, 4-2, en route to a final 7-9-3 (4-3-1) record.

Loyola Chicago, which kicks off its inaugural season with the Atlantic 10 this year, was selected fifth with 128 points. The Ramblers managed to place stud defender Michael Hong, who registered first-team honors last year during Loyola's final campaign in the Missouri Valley, on the Preseason All-Conference Team as well.

Dayton slid in at sixth behind 125 points with Duquesne (116) and Saint Joseph's (115) rounding out the predicted postseason crew. Notably, the Dukes picked up a pair of Preseason All-Conference selections in the form of 2021 first-team choice Maxi Hopfer as well as second-team pick Nathan Dragisich.

Massachusetts (87) locked in at ninth with Davidson (72), La Salle (56) and George Washinton (51) claiming 10th through 12th. The Wildcats and Colonials registered the final two positions on the Preseason All-Conference Team, with junior defender Nico Cavallo representing the former and senior goalkeeper Justin Grady standing in for the latter.

George Mason (36) and St. Bonaventure (26) wrapped up the poll.

The 2022 Atlantic 10 Men's Soccer season officially kicks off on Thursday, Aug. 25 with all 14 programs getting underway across the first two days of action. Conference play begins on Saturday, Sept. 17 before the league concludes the campaign with the 2022 Atlantic 10 Men's Soccer Championship, set for Nov. 4 - 13 on the campuses of the highest-seeded institutions.
