FAIRFAX, Va. – Top-seeded George Washington (35-14) showcased a decisive offensive efficiency throughout Friday evening's Atlantic 10 Softball Championship Semifinal, scoring a combined four runs across the opening two frames along with another four in the sixth inning – including a three-RBI walk-off double from Hannah Eslick – to clinch victory over No. 5 Dayton on Friday evening at the George Mason Softball Complex.
With the victory, the Colonials earn the right to defend their A-10 Softball Championship, hosting second-seeded Fordham in a rematch of Friday's early afternoon semifinal clash at the George Mason Softball Complex, first pitch slated for 10:30 am. Fordham, who secured the winner's bracket, needs just one victory to clinch the title while GW requires back-to-back wins on Saturday to defend its championship.
George Washington got off to the fastest start of any team at the tournament thus far, tallying three runs in the first frame behind a two-run shot from A-10 Player of the Year Alexa Williams before a Maggie Greco single down the stretch plated one more. The Colonials kept the pressure up in the second inning as well, as back-to-back two-out singles from Williams and Alessandra Ponce knocked home another score, pushing the GW edge out to four.
Following scoreless frames, the Colonials opted to end the contest early, loading the bases with no outs before notching one run off an RBI walk from Mia Parker and a decisive three off a lethal double into the left-center gap from Eslick.
In the circle, A-10 Pitcher of the Year Sierra Lange proved as effective as ever, setting down four on strikes while containing Dayton to just two total hits and three walks with no runs surrendered.
