NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Atlantic 10 Conference named Rhode Island junior Rachel Zingerman the A-10 Softball Player of the Week. George Washington graduate student Sierra Lange earned Pitcher of the Week honors while Dayton freshman Emma Schutter collected the league’s Rookie of the Week. The awards were announced Monday and are for games played April 4-10.
Zingerman batted .556 from the leadoff position (10-for-18) with three doubles, five runs scored and four runs batted in while leading Rhode Island to a 4-1 record in five games. Playing first base, the Point Pleasant Beach, N.J., native had four multi-hit games on the offensive end and defensively she had 35 putouts and one assist with no errors. In the three-game series against St. Bonaventure, Zingerman was 8-for-10 (.800) with four runs scored and two RBI.
Lange went 3-1 on the week, allowing just two runs across 28 innings pitched with 22 strikeouts. The right-hander from Plano, Texas, started her week with a dominant 4-0 shutout of Hampton on Wednesday in which she allowed just two hits and struck out nine and then proceeded to pitch three complete games on the weekend against Dayton, highlighted by a six-hit shutout in the second game on Saturday to help the Buff and Blue score a 4-0 victory.
Schutter, an outfielder from Dayton, Ohio, led the Flyers with a .636 average in a 1-2 weekend at league-leading George Washington. In Dayton's 1-0 win in Saturday's first game, she went 2-for-4 and followed that with a perfect 3-for-3 outing in the 4-0 nightcap loss. With her 2-for-4 day on Sunday, Schutter extended her reached-base streak to 18 games and tallied her 13th multi-hit game of the season.
