NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- The Atlantic 10 Conference has named Dayton juniors Connor Bruce and Elizabeth Hamilton its Men’s and Women's Tennis Player of the Week, while Dayton freshman Eric Perkowski and Renata Farima of Massachusetts were named Men’s and Women’s Rookie of the Week. The awards, announced Tuesday, are matches played before Jan. 31-Feb.6.
Bruce, a native of Pittsburgh, Pa., won both matches he competed in last weekend against Youngstown State. He clinched the doubles point with Will Harper, surviving three match points to take a 7-6 win in No. 3 doubles. He went on to win against Laurentiu Mandocescu in the top singles flight, taking the match in straight sets 6-3, 6-4.
Hamilton, went 3-1 overall between singles and doubles play. The Union, Ky., native took down Liz Stefancic of Marshall in three sets, following a straight-set victory over Sara Linn of Butler. Both of those came at the No. 3 singles flight. Hamilton also paired with Paige Kompa to win at No. 2 doubles against Marshall. She sits 6-2 in dual matches this season and has won four-straight singles matches.
Perkowski, a native of Lincolnshire, Ill., won his lone match of the weekend, his fifth in a row, this time against Will Everett of Youngstown State. Perkowski won in straight sets in No. 6 singles 6-4, 7-6.
Farima, a native of Chisinau, Republic of Moldova., had a successful weekend as the Minutewomen went 2-0 overall on Saturday, getting a 4-0 victory at Army and a 6-1 triumph against St. Bonaventure. Farima also went 2-0 in both doubles and singles competition. The freshman and doubles partner Anna Napadiy defeated their Army opponents, 6-2, on court No. 3 to clinch the doubles point for UMass, before going on to win 6-0 later in the day at No. 2 against their St. Bonaventure competition. At No. 1 singles, Farima took down her Army opponent, 6-3, 6-0, while also defeating her St. Bonaventure opponent 6-2, 6-0.
