NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Atlantic 10 Conference has named VCU junior Ace Baldwin, Jr. its Men's Basketball Player of the Week. Loyola Chicago redshirt freshman Ben Schwieger was chosen as the league’s Rookie of the Week. The awards were announced Monday and are for games played Nov. 28 – Dec. 4.
Baldwin averaged 22.0 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.0 steals, while shooting .579 (11-of-19) from the field, including 5-of-6 (.833) from 3-point range in games against Vanderbilt and Temple. The guard from Baltimore, Md., shot 17-of-19 (.856) from the free throw line and posted a 3.3-to-1 assist to turnover ratio. He returned from injury after missing four games and poured in a career-high 28 points in a 70-65 win over Vanderbilt Wednesday. Baldwin then added 16 points and nine assists at Temple on Saturday.
Schwieger averaged 17.0 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 1.5 steals across the Ramblers' two games last week. A guard/forward, he led the Maroon & Gold in an 85-70 win over Central Arkansas, connecting on six 3-pointers as part of a career-best 26-point effort against the Bears. The Aurora, Ill., product added eight points in Saturday's clash with city rival DePaul. A starter in each of Loyola's last three games, Schwieger currently ranks second on the team in scoring, averaging 10.4 points per game.
