AMHERST, Mass. – Saint Joseph’s captured its sixth Atlantic 10 Field Hockey Championship Saturday afternoon at Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex with a 3-0 win over the No. 2 Massachusetts.
Saint Joseph’s (15-4) trio of goals came from Sol Borensztein, Lily Santi, and Freke van Tilburg, earning the Hawks their second straight title and fifth in the last six years. SJU receives the Atlantic 10’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The NCAA selection show is set Sunday at 10:00 pm ET on NCAA.com.
The Hawks defense was nearly unbreakable, as UMass was held without a shot or penalty corner, resulting in SJU’s tenth shutout of the year.
Conversely, Saint Joseph’s was dominant offensively with 18 shots and seven corners. The Hawks’ scored their first goal in the 21st minute. Sol Borensztein scored her third goal of the season, burying a rebound following the initial shot off a penalty corner, earning her a spot on the All-Championship team.
Lily Santi, the championship’s Most Outstanding Player, added her 17th goal of the year just 2:12 into the second half, also scoring off a corner following a pass by All-Championship selection Freke van Tilburg.
Van Tilburg added an insurance in the 51st minute, the Hawks again scoring on a corner with help from Katy Benton and Anna Miller.
UMass (15-6) goalie Myrte Van Herwijnen made five saves and earned a spot on the All-Championship team. Her teammates Steph Gottwals and Paula Lorenzini also earned All-Championship honors. In addition to Santi, van Tilburg and Borensztein, SJU also had Benton and Leigh James claim a spot on the All-Championship Team. Lock Haven’s Jazmin Palma and VCU’s Camila Rosenbrock rounded out the 11-player team.
