RICHMOND, Va. – Dayton was aggressive offensively all night, but it took until the 89
th minute for the sixth-seeded Flyers to find the back of the net and beat No. 3 VCU, 1-0, Friday in the Atlantic 10 Men’s Soccer Championship quarterfinals at Sportsbackers Stadium.
Michael Adedokun sent UD to the A-10 semifinals with a free kick just outside the penalty box with 1:10 to play. It was the only shot that passed the pipes for either team, despite a combined 31 attempts.
Dayton (9-2-4) advance to the semifinals to face a yet-to-be-determined opponent, depending on the outcome of the other three quarterfinal matches. The championship is reseeded following the quarterfinals.
VCU (3-7-6) keeper John Ermini kept the Rams in the game in the first half, making four saves against 13 Dayton shots. The Flyers totaled 25 shots in the contest, six of which were on net, led by Adedokun, Joseph Melto Quiah and Manny Day who had four shots each.
Ermini record six total saves in the match, but had no chance to stop the rocketing game winner, which was essentially a long penalty kick.
Dario Caetano, the UD keeper only had to make one save, as VCU managed six shots, led by Camilo Comi with three. Dayton also held a decisive lead in corner kicks, 12-1, seven of which came in the first half.
