RICHMOND, Va. – Natalie Nevins scored in the 31
st minute and Katie Cappelletti made three saves to lift No. 6 Saint Joseph’s to a 1-0 road victory over No. 3 VCU at Sports Backers Stadium Friday Night it the Atlantic 10 Women’s Soccer Quarterfinals.
The Hawks advance to the semifinals and will travel to either No. 1 Saint Louis or No. 4 Davidson, depending on the outcome of Saturday’s Saint Louis-Loyola Chicago quarterfinal match. The championship is reseeded following the quarterfinals.
VCU (8-2-8) held a definitive 17-9 advantage on shots, but it had just three of those on target, all of which were stopped by Cappelletti.
One of just two shots on net for SJU (4-7-7), Nevin’s goal came following a cross in the box by Rachel Brown. The quick pass across found a wide-open Nevins who had an open look after VCU keeper Whitney Horton had squared up on Brown and could not come back across fast enough.
VCU did put the goal past the pipes late in the second half, but the score was disallowed due to the Rams being offsides.
The Saint Joseph’s win marks the second year in a row the Hawks have upset the homestanding Rams. Last year, eighth-seeded SJU beat top-seeded VCU 1-0 in the quarterfinals.
