NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – VCU sophomore Celio Pompeu was named Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s Soccer Player of the Week while Saint Louis sophomore Patrick Schulte earned the A-10 Defensive Player of the Week. Rhody freshman Isak Oystese repeated as the league's Rookie of the Week. The awards are for games played Sept. 6-12.
Pompeu notched his first goal of the season to seal a 2-0 win at RV/#24 Charlotte on Friday placing a left-footed finish past the goalkeeper from 12 yards out. The winger from Fortalexa, Brazil, was a threat throughout the game, recording a game-high three shots on goal.
A goalkeeper from St. Charles, Mo., Schulte did not allow a goal in regular play in the Billikens' two games. The only marker Schulte didn't stop was a penalty kick goal by No. 8 SMU. He totaled eight saves for the week, registering five saves in the shutout win against Memphis and three saves to secure the tie at SMU.
Oystese earned his first Rookie of the Week award last week. A forward from Oslow, Norway, he scored both goals in URI's 2-1 win at Merrimack. The first goal was a diving header in the 36th minute, and the game-winning goal came in the 81st minute. Oytese now leads the team with six points on three goals.
