NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Atlantic 10 family mourns the loss of Jonathan Smith, the Vice President of Diversity and Community Engagement at Saint Louis University, and a member of the A-10's Commission for Racial Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, and George Washington assistant volleyball coach, Brianna Barry.

“To have lost two exceptional individuals within our A-10 family this past weekend is heartbreaking,” stated Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade. “Life is fragile and on behalf of the league, I extend our deepest sympathy and support to the Smith and Barry families, as well as Saint Louis University and George Washington University.”

“He always had a passion for those with more marginalized identities, who were excluded,” SLU President Fred Pestello said in an interview Sunday. “He was deeply involved in helping increase efforts for diversity and inclusion and equity … He was a mentor to many people.”

"It is with the heaviest of hearts that we remember Bri," said GW Director of Athletics Tanya Vogel. "The joy that she brought to our department was immeasurable. Bri was full of life and her vibrance made her a favorite of everybody that had the pleasure of knowing her. We are hurting for her family, our student-athletes who thrived in her presence, and our staff and campus community who she touched."

Jonathan Smith's work and life are detailed in a piece by Rachel Rice for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, which can be found here. A statement on Brianna Barry from GW Athletics can be read here.
