MERION STATION, Pa. - The fourth-seeded Flyers used an explosive third inning and a complete game from Addy Bullis to defeat No. 3 Fordham, 7-1, and earn their first berth to the Atlantic 10 Softball Championship since 2015.
The A-10 Rookie of the Year, Fordham's Devon Miller struck out five consecutive batters through the third inning, but Megan Gist would break the streak, homering to left field for her third, and a 1-0 lead in the top of the third. Megan Ward and Abby Ehrenborg each collected a walk before Katie Reeg reached on an error, loading the bases. Taylor Erschen took full advantage of the pinch-hit situation, lining a double to left center to clear the bases and extend the Flyers lead to 4-0.
Ward tacked on another run for the Flyers in the top of the fourth, collecting her second hit of the day, and RBI double for a 5-0 UD lead. Another walk loaded the bases again with Alyssa Cacini at the plate. Cacini singled back up the middle to collect an RBI, scoring Gist.
The Rams got one back in the bottom of the fifth, after a perfect bunt from Michaela Carter and a throwing error advanced her to second. Maddie Aughinbaugh also reached safely on a throwing error from third base, scoring Carter for their first run of the game.
The Flyers bats came alive in the top of the sixth with an Ehrenborg double to left field, followed by a Cacini single back up the middle. Quinn Pallardy reached on a Fordham fielding error, scoring Ehrenborg from third for a 7-1 lead, but Bailey Enoch forced a fielder's choice to end the inning with just one run allowed.
Bullis pitched a nearly perfect complete game, three-hit game with five strikeouts and no walks for the Flyers. Miller, who pitched 3.1 innings was credited with the loss, striking out six with three unearned runs allowed. Enoch came on in relief for the Rams, fanning three over 3.2 innings, allowing just one earned run and five hits.
With the win, the Flyers advance to Saturday's Championship final and will face the winner of the consolation bracket final between No. 1 George Washington and No. 3 Fordham. First pitch is slated for Noon at the SJU Softball Field.
