NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Atlantic 10 Conference has named VCU junior Janne Wetzel and senior Sasha Elliott its Field Hockey Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively. Massachusetts freshman Josephine Ang was named Rookie of the Week. The awards, announced Monday and presented by Biosteel, are for games played Mar. 29 - Apr. 4.

Wetzel, a midfielder from Munich, Germany, scored VCU's lone goal in regulation in the 2-1 win over Richmond and also scored the deciding goal in the penalty shootout to clinch the win for the Rams. The win pushed VCU to a 5-0 start to conference play, marking the best start in school history to conference play. Wetzel's goal in regulation came just three minutes in, locking the cross-town rivals in a 1-1 battle for the remainder of the contest.

Elliott made two saves in regulation of VCU's 2-1 shootout win over Richmond and denied the Spiders on three of their four penalty shootout attempts to preserve the win. A goalie from Amsterdam, Netherlands, Elliott has only allowed two goals total in five conference games and has also recorded three shutouts.

Ang scored the game-winning goal in overtime of Massachusetts’ 2-1 victory at Lock Haven on April 3. It came on Ang’s lone shot of the day and after Ang briefly exited the game in the first half due to injury. Her four goals on the season and two-game winners are tied for the team lead.
