Wetzel's Late Goal Lifts VCU Field Hockey to A-10 Championship Final

RICHMOND, Va. - VCU's Janne Wetzel scored the lone goal off a penalty corner with less than three minutes left to lift the top-seeded Rams over No. 3 Richmond and in the A-10 Field Hockey Championship semifinals , held at the Rams' Cary Street Field. The goal broke a scoreless tie of more than 57 minutes.

The Rams will face the winner of of the second seminfinal between No. 2 Lock Haven and No. 3 Saint Joseph's in the championship final. The title match will be played  Saturday at noon on ESPN+.

Sisters Maite and Svea Sturm both collected an assist on the corner attack score, as Wetzel, the A-10's Defensive Player of the Year, drilled a shot from the top of the circle low into the right corner of the cage for her fifth goal of the season.

The game between crosstown rivals, VCU (8-0, 6-0 A-10) and Richmond (4-3, 4-2 A-10), happened mostly in the midfield, with the teams trading momentum and possessions. The Rams had five corner chances, including the game-winner, while the Spiders had three chances on the corner attack.

UR's Erika Latta made three saves on the game, while Sasha Elliott made two saves in the contest.
