NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Atlantic 10 Conference has named Richmond junior Steffie Bongers and Saint Joseph's senior Sara Hayes its Field Hockey Co-Players of the Week. Richmond sophomore Erika Latta earned Defensive Player of the Week while Lock Haven freshman Martina Spangenberg and Saint Joseph's freshman Katelyn Cocco shared Rookie of the Week accolades. The awards, announced Monday and presented by Biosteel, are for the final week of the season, Apr. 12-18.
In Sunday's 2-1 win over Davidson, Bongers tallied both Richmond goals off of penalty corners, inserted by Olivia Frazier. She now leads the team with six goals on the season and second in points with 13. The two goals scored by the defender from Weert, Netherlands, helped the Spiders clinch the fourth seed in the Atlantic 10 Championship field.
Hayes tallied two goals on Saturday as the Hawks held on to beat UMass, 5-4, and clinch a spot in the A-10 Field Hockey Championship. Hayes, a forward, scored twice within the first 22 minutes to give the Hawks a 4-0 advantage in the contest. The Drexel Hill, Pa., native currently ranks third on the team in goals and points this season.
In Richmond's 2-1 victory, Latta made one save in three shots faced from Davidson in 45 minutes in goal for a 1.000 save percentage. The goalie from Midlothian, Va., did not allow a goal and collected the win to move to 4-2 in her first season starting in goal. For the season, Latta has made 23 saves for a .821 save percentage and only allowed five goals in 50 shots faced for a 0.92 goals against average.
Spangenberg put Lock Haven up 1-0 in the 36th minute Saturday against La Salle in an eventual 2-1 victory. It marked the second goal of the season for the midfielder from Buenos Aires and helped the Bald Eagles finish the season at 4-1 in A-10 play and secure the No. 2 seed for the upcoming A-10 Championship.
Cocco, a rookie forward from Holland, Pa., scored the opening goal on Saturday as the Hawks jumped out to a big lead before hanging on to beat UMass, 5-4, and clinch a spot in the A-10 Field Hockey Championship. The Hawks will be making their sixth consecutive trip to the A-10 postseason.
