DAYTON, Ohio – Third-seeded Fordham scored twice and kept No. 4 George Washington off the scoreboard to capture the 2020-21 Atlantic 10 Men's Soccer Championship crown with a 2-0 win Saturday afternoon at Baujan Field.
The Rams will advance to the NCAA Tournament on the Atlantic 10's automatic bid. The selection show is scheduled for noon ET Monday on NCAA.com.
Atlantic 10 Championship Most Outstanding Player Matt Sloan gave Fordham a 1-0 lead midway through the first half, scoring in the 29
th on a pass from Galen Flynn. The Rams, who finished with 15 total shots, seven of which were on goal, followed with a couple of other strong chances. Most missed the mark, but another shot by Sloan looked headed for the upper left when All-Championship Team selection Justin Grady made a spectacular leaping save for GW. Grady finished the game with five saves and made 11 for the championship.
Fordham added an insurance goal in the 54
th minute when Alberto Pangrazzi headed the ball into the net following a feed from Sameer Fathazada to give the Rams a 2-0 lead. Both Pangrazzi and Fathazada were named All-Championship.
GW had a few late chances, totaling six shots in the game, but were unable to break through. Sandro Weber, who was named to the All-Championship Team, led the Colonials with three shots.
Fordham keeper Josh Levine, who also was named All-Championship, made one save on the day. The Rams led in corner kicks, 9-2 and committed 10 fouls to GW's eight.
In addition to Sloan, Levine, Pangrazzi, Fathazada, Weber and Grady, other All-Championship team selections included Luke McNamara and Flynn from Fordham; Tom Cooklin from GW, Christian Buendia of Saint Louis and Dayton's Kingsford Adjei.
