ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Top-seeded Saint Louis (13-0-3, 8-0-0 A-10) managed to take care of business in the team's Atlantic 10 Men's Soccer Championship quarterfinals clash against visiting No. 8 Dayton (6-9-3, 3-4-1 A-10), maintaining the Billikens' undefeated record via a 2-0 shutout of the Flyers late Saturday evening at Robert R. Hermann Stadium.
With the victory, SLU moves on to the program's second consecutive A-10 Men's Soccer Championship semifinals round, battling defending champion and fourth-seeded Fordham at 1 p.m. ET on Friday, Nov. 12. The contest will be broadcast live via ESPN+.
Notably, the Rams ousted Saint Louis in each of the past two A-10 Championships, defeating the Billikens by a 1-0 mark in the 2019 quarterfinals and a 2-1 margin in the 2020-21 semifinals.
Saint Louis bolted out on top of the Flyers early on at the 16-minute mark, as A.J. Palazzolo drilled a long shot from just outside the box off the crossbar and in for the 1-0 Billiken advantage. The score serves as just the second of the year for the senior.
In spite of Dayton threatening an equalizer on a number of occasions, the most memorable of which came at the 38th minute as SLU keeper Patrick Schulte collected two diving saves in the span of approximately five seconds, the Billikens hung onto their narrow advantage for virtually the entire contest.
The junior duo of Simon Becher and Chris Bruch assured the victory as the pair drove home the dagger for Saint Louis in the 86th minute, tacking on an insurance score via a perfect through pass from the former to the latter.
Statistically, the SLU saw Dayton play a tight match throughout, surpassing the Flyers offensively in shots-on-goal (4-to-3) and corner kicks (4-to-3) by negligible margins. Becher concluded the match as the lone Billiken with more than one shot (3) while UD's Adjei Kingsford earned the match-high for the category with four.
In net, Schulte's three saves actually outpaced his Flyers counterpart, Marc Kouadio, who finished with two.
