NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Atlantic 10 Conference has named Fordham junior Kaitlyn Downey and Rhode Island junior Emmanuelle Tahane as A-10 Women’s Basketball Co-Players of the Week. Dayton freshman Tenin Magassa was chosen as the league’s Rookie of the Week. The awards were announced Monday and are for games played Jan. 11-17.
Downey, a guard from Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y., scored all 24 of her points after the first frame in Sunday’s win at Saint Louis, including 21 second-half points. Downey matched her career-highs of 24 points and six made 3-pointers (on nine attempts), while notching her fifth double-double of the year with 13 rebounds, plus five total assists and a steal across 35 minutes.
Tahane had a 25-point, 13-rebounds double-double in the Rams win over Richmond. It was her third straight double-double performance and fourth total this year. Her 25 points and 13 rebounds both match her career highs as well. A forward from Bondy, France, she shot an impressive 11-of-13 from the field (.846) and added three steals in helping lead Rhody to a 4-2 start in league play, it’s best since 95-96.
Magassa had a career-performance Thursday, leading the Flyers with 19 points on 9-of-12 (.750) shooting and adding seven rebounds and five blocks in the win over Davidson. The center from Morsang-Sur-Orge, France, shot 75 percent from the field and helped Dayton dominate the paint on both ends of the floor as UD stayed undefeated in league play. Magassa is averaging 8.1 points and 5.1 rebounds per game off the bench, in just 19.1 minutes of action, and shooting 59.5 percent overall.
