Breen Repeats as A-10 Player of the Week; Budnik Selected as Rookie of the Week

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Atlantic 10 Conference has named Massachusetts senior Sam Breen as A-10 Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for the second straight week. Richmond freshman Addie Budnik was selected as the league’s Rookie of the Week. The awards were announced Monday and are for games played Jan. 4-10.
 
Breen averaged 16.3 points with two double-doubles in a 2-1 week for UMass She had 11 points and 11 rebounds in a loss to Rhode Island, and then shot 9-of-16 (.563) for 19 points, with eight boards and four steals in a win over Davidson. The forward from Gibsonia, Pa., keyed a comeback victory over Fordham with 17 of her 19 points coming in the second half on 8-of-13 (.615) shooting. Breen added 10 boards in that win for her second double-double of the week and sixth of the season to lead UMass past Fordham for the first time since 2009-10.
 
Budnik averaged 15.0 points per game to help Richmond earn two road wins at St. Bonaventure and at Duquesne. A forward from Highland Park, Ill., she finished with 18 points, including nine in the fourth quarter to help seal the road win at Duquesne, winning against the Dukes on the  road for the first time since 2011. Budnik shot 45.0 percent (9-for-20) and was 10-for-12 (.833) from the free throw line in two wins. She maintained her A-10 lead in blocks with six in the two wins, including four against Duquesne. She also averaged 6.0 rebounds per game and dished out seven assists in two games, and scored 12 points in the win at St. Bonaventure.

Jenna Giacone averaged 15 points and 6.0 rebounds in a pair of road wins for Dayton, including tallying 17 points at George Washington … Dayton freshman Makira Cook had seven points, four rebounds and two assists in the Flyers’ win at George Mason … Tess Myers tallied 20 points, four rebounds and four assists for Duquesne versus VCU, hitting 6-of-11 (.545) from 3-point range … Duquesne freshman Megan McConnell had 13.5 points, 6.0 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 3.0 steals per game in two games for the Dukes … Anna DeWolfe averaged 24.0 points and 3.0 assist per game, scoring 27 in Fordham’s win at Rhode Island … La Salle’s Claire Jacobs scored 21 points with nine rebounds on 7-of-11 (.636) from the field and a perfect 6-of-6 at the line in a win over Saint Joseph’s … Massachusetts freshman Ber’Nyah Mayo averaged 3.3 steals per game, totaling 10 in three games to go with 8.3 points per game for UMass  … Emmanuelle Tahane had a pair of double-doubles for Rhode Island, with 18 points and 11 rebounds against Fordham, followed by 12 points and 13 rebounds in a win over Davidson … Richmond’s Kate Klimkiewicz led the Spiders to a 2-0 week with 16.0 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.0 steals per game … St. Bonaventure’s Tori Harris had a 12-point, 11-rebounds double-double against Richmond and averaged 15.0 points and 8.5 rebounds across two games … Saint Joseph’s Gabby Smalls tallied a 14-point, 14-rebound double-double in the Hawks second game with La Salle, after a near double-double of 11 points and nine rebounds in the first matchup …Sydnei Archie averaged 15.5 points and 9.5 rebounds for VCU, which won a pair of overtime road contests.
