RICHMOND, Va. – Another VCU Baseball standout, Paul Witt, has inked a free agent contract, taking his talents to the next level with the Washington Nationals. A staple for the Rams from the moment he stepped on campus, Witt was a vital piece not only to the infield, but also the VCU batting order.

"This is one of the greatest opportunities I could get," said Witt. "I am very excited to have this opportunity and am thankful to my VCU family for providing that opportunity."

Witt, a Harpers Ferry, W.Va. native, spent his entire collegiate career with the Rams. He made an immediate impact, starting all 55 games as a freshman and posting the second-highest batting average that season. He remained a consistent threat, and in 2019 he was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Conference First Team at second base. He was awarded the honor after appearing in 58 games with 57 starts, recording 75 hits, scoring 48 runs and plating 50 more.

"This is great news for Paul. We are so happy for him," said VCU Baseball head coach Shawn Stiffler. "He has been a mainstay in our lineup and so consistent throughout his career. He recently received his diploma and now gets a chance to chase dreams."

Before the 2020 season was cut short, Witt played and started in all 17 games. He was ever consistent at the plate where he posted 21 hits, lead the team with nine doubles, scored 11 runs and drew 15 walks.

All told, Witt donned a VCU uniform in 187 games, starting in 186. He finished his career with a .326 batting average, 236 hits, 128 RBI and 118 runs.
